The ST80 is an f/5 tube so using a 2x barlow would increase the f/stop to f/10 which is too slow for birding in my opinion.

I have tried a balow on the moon but the results were not ideal.

This is a interesting article. Have you ever tried with a barlow? How would be the image quality with it? Would it still be possible to shoot bird (or the moon, of course) with a barlow, or shall we have reached the resolving power?
