Appletastic

23 02 2011

It’s that time of year again when apple releases it’s new products. It looks like they are combining the new ipad2 and MacBook pro refresh announcements.

My predictions for the new iPad won’t surprise anyone, a smaller svelt case, same battery life, maybe a little lighter. Added camera (just one I think, not the predicted 2), I very much doubt any new connecters will make an appearance. Any one who is expecting an SD card slot will be disappointed.

The new MacBook pros will only be a small update, a push to i5 for the 13″ version. Not so sure about thunderbolt / light peak.

We’ll see how close I am next week, invitations have been given out for the March 2nd “show”.

Lazy days

22 01 2011

I feel I should blog more often but my days have been very busy lately with work, family and a general commitment to be more lazy. It has been nearly a month since my last entry, and to be honest, nothing exciting has happened worth blogging about. I could talk about inane things like I’ve ordered a new car… But it’s a Citroen C1 so not much to shout about. I’ve also mostly stuck to my new years resolution and lost 3lbs. Not a huge amount but it’s a start.

All in all a generally average start to the year. Let’s hope it gets more exciting. That being said isn’t it the Chinese who say may you live in interesting times?

Happy New Year

3 01 2011

And all that jazz. As it’s traditional I’m making a resolution to loose weight, exercise more and yada yada yada.

I’m 99% sure that I will have forgotten all about it by this time next month (next week?). Although I do have more motivation this time round as the missus has made the same resolution.

White Christmas

14 12 2010

The news on the radio this morning says that we are (almost) guaranteed a white Christmas for 2010. I’m in two minds if this is a good thing or a bad thing.

As a parent of an excitable 4 year old it’s great. I can’t think of many things better than making snowmen with my family. I can’t wait to go sledging!

The adult in me says bar humbug, it’s cold, it’s wet and it’s cold. Plus my Amazon deliveries are taking much longer than usual. I don’t like it! It was -15C here last week and that’s as cold as my freezer. Global warming has a lot to live up to I tell you. The roads become death traps and my local council had deemed virtually every road I use as a non-priority, i.e. no need to grit. Despite all this I still have to go to work (although many colleagues who live closer think they don’t have to!)

In general I’m much more a summer person than a winter person. I need to see if I still have enough points to emigrate to Oz!

SEO and websites

5 12 2010

I just knocked up a website for my wifes fused glass business she’s starting. http://catalystglass.co.uk it’s a fairly simple site but i’m diving into the wonders of search engine optimisation. I’ve always known that this existed, but in the past outsourced this type of thing. I’m learning though that the complexities of how pagerank works is actual quite ingenious! No wonder search is such big business…

Winter, cold and clouds

23 11 2010

Well it’s winter… again. I was rather looking forward to the dark nights so I could get a little bit of astronomy done but I don’t think I’ve seen a clear night yet. I did spot Orion one evening driving home from a restaurant but by the time I had got home the clouds had returned (and the wine probably wouldn’t have helped proceedings either!)

All in all it’s been a rather wet and dismal winter so far as we are only just beginning. It’s bound to get worse; in fact I’m being regaled by colleagues of tales of snow coming, who I’m sure only tell me these things to make me feel worse.

Whilst I’m feeling glum the thought occurs that I may be a victim of seasonal affective disorder. Perhaps something to look into. Either a bit of winter sun or failing that a sunlight lamp perhaps. I wonder if I could get either through company expenses?

Whats that coming over the hill…. is it a monster?!

12 11 2010

No it’s my mid 30′s…. Happy Birthday to me…

I never understood birthday celebrations. Yes in bygone days it was something to celebrate the fact that you hadn’t died that winter, but in these modern times your good health is all butĀ guaranteed. Do we really need a constant reminder by well meaning friends and family that the clock is ticking and your death isĀ inevitable and getting closer?

It sounds morbid but I’m of an opinion that these facts should be accepted and you should come to terms with your own mortality. Although that being said I’m a big believer in nanotechnology and I keep hearing that the singularity is just around the corner so maybe I don’t have to accept my mortality… I give myself a 25% chance of living forever (or at least until I get bored). I give my offspring a 50% chance of living forever. I give my grandkids a 99.9% chance of living forever but by then it will be 2110 and we’ll be living on the moon!

All that being said I can’t complain about jelly and ice cream… always welcome!

Windows server 2003

24 10 2010

I recently had an “opportunity” to install Windows Server 2003. Not 2008 or even 2003 R2, but plain ol’ 2003. It got me to thinking, what on earth do they ACTUALLY need this software for? File sharing? User accounts? DHCP? All in all, apart from the very base networking stuff, all the services traditionally offered by server OS’s have migrated to the cloud. In this particular instance there is nothing that the company would loose by moving all the workstations to chrome os. Yes they would need an ISP upgrade, but the saving on hardware would more than make up for that. User accounts are combined with email accounts and services like Google docs can replace file sharing.

The future will be an interesting place, and I wonder if Microsoft will keep up with the change or become the next IBM.

Winter

22 10 2010

Is it just me or has winter come early this year? It’s brass monkies out there!
